Gold Coast - Sun, sand and sea

The sun sets early in June and by 530 pm, it's already dark. What this means is that we get to come back early after a day of activities to rest and relax. The kids play and fight, we watch TV and read. It's also a time for family to bond over meals and play, a much needed break from a hectic city lifestyle.

Relaxation is something the Aussies do well. On a Friday afternoon, people are making their way home. Weekends are precious. Late night shopping till 9 pm takes place only on Thursdays. The Aussies are out and about early during weekends, enjoying themselves at the beaches or having family picnics at parks. Numerous playgrounds can be found all over Brisbane. Our favourite was the one at Southport where Kieran got to swing on a tyre and the boys could cycle all round the playground.

Unlike the cities of Melbourne and Sydney, the Brisbane folks are more laid back and very friendly. The only drawback is that you can't really get good Asian fare here although we had an interesting Japanese teppanaki meal at the Mariott where we celebrated our 12th year wedding anniversary.

We did the usual bringing the kids to the different theme parks but the highlight of the trip was definitely checking out the various beaches. Our favourite was Burleigh Heads where apparently you can spot whales although we didn't see any.
