The driveway leading up to the main entrance of Stanford University is lined with palm trees on either side, giving the impression of entering a country club rather than a place of higher learning. Indeed, Stanford is quite unlike any other university and definitely bears no hint of its origins, which was actually farmland. The lawns are neatly manicured, surrounded by lush trees (apparently specially brought in because the vegetation is brown at this time in dry California weather) and beautiful sandstone buildings. This place smacks of privilege, and one senses this very strongly in this town.
The heart of the university is the main quad where the memorial church stands. It is quiet now because the autumn quarter has yet to start but I can imagine how it will be like later this month when the students return. There is also this place called the oval that we saw while on the shuttle bus that looks like a perfect picnic spot but probably that will be for another time.
