Our house at Stanford University looks nondescript from the outside but is actually a really pleasant and relaxing place. The best thing about it is that there is a little backyard that opens out into a big grass field where children can play. The compound is gated to ensure the safety of the children, and toys owned or left behind by other families are placed in the open to be shared among the kids.

It is hardly a surprise then that the playground has become our favourite family hangout. Coming from Singapore where most of us live in high-rise apartments, it is a nice feeling to live in a house with a yard and open field so close by. I envisage many lazy afternoons to be spent here.

The back of the house

The family has been busy settling down and adjusting to our new life since arriving on 3 September. Hubby D even managed to buy a cheap hand-me-down TV set with stand for USD 25 bucks! We also visited the local farmers' market at California Avenue over the weekend for some fresh produce. The tomatoes, zucchinis, and strawberries were absolutely yummy!

I cooked my first meal -- pasta with fresh tomatoes and zucchinis -- for the family on Sunday. You can't go wrong with pasta for kids -- Kieran really loves it!
