Berkeley

If Stanford was a woman, she would certainly be a well-groomed lady, impeccably dressed in the latest styles. In comparison, I imagine Berkeley to be her less organised and slightly dishevelled cousin, with a fondness for all things vintage. This is probably an apt way to describe the disparity in the vibe and feel of the two university campuses. It also perhaps explains the stiff rivalry between them.

Stanford, with its country club air, smacks of priviledge and wealth while the University of California Berkeley evokes more of a liberal and free-spirited atmosphere. It is perhaps not surprising that the university used to be at the heart of political riots in the country.

In Berkeley over the weekend to pick up some winter gear at the North Face outlet, we decided to drop in on the campus on a biting cold afternoon. Despite the grey skies and the rain, the views from the top of the Sather Tower (apparently the world's third largest bell tower) were breathtaking.
