There are many songs written about Las Vegas but there is nothing quite like seeing the city for yourself. Famous for its giltzy hotels and casinos along the Strip, which have been featured in countless Hollywood movies, the city nonetheless captivates the first-timer. Of course some of the man-made attractions are tacky. Imagine being up close to an erupting volcano at the Mirage and seeing larger-than-life imitations of famous world landmarks such as the Effiel Tower and the Statue of Liberty but there are also gems. I was entranced by the fountain show at the Bellagio and "Mystere", a Cirque Du Soleil show that we caught, was excellent.
With a toddler in tow, it was difficult to check out the night scene although you couldn't avoid seeing the slot machines. They were everywhere! We had to walk past the casinos to get to the buffets at the Rio Las Vegas and the Bellagio and Kieran was invariable drawn to the bright lights.
The highlight of the trip was surely a visit to the magnificent Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, despite the painfully exhausting bus journey (10 hours for the round trip). Pictures don't do it justice. You've got to see it for yourself. It was cold and windy when we arrived and we had to struggle to get a cranky Kieran into his winter coat but the views just took my breath away. Then it started to snow rather heavily in the later afternoon but that didn't dampen our spirits. We were feeling on top of the world despite the cold!
